During his address to 60 students at an orientation day hosted by the School of Accounting, Economics and Finance, Grindrod Asset Management’s Portfolio Manager, Mr Geoff Noble, shared his experiences as a Fund Manager and things he wished he knew when he was a student.

‘Today I am going to talk to you about what I do, what I did or studied to get into a position to be managing money as well as what I wish I had known before,’ said Noble.

‘What should you be doing to become a Fund Manager? Finance honours is a good start, the next steps are doing a CFA programme, reading more and getting work experience because you cannot get out of university and start managing money right away,’ said Noble.

He advised them to learn how to build a proper financial model and how to use Microsoft Excel properly as it was a tool they would use daily. He encouraged them to be realistic about their job expectations and be prepared to start from the bottom.

Finance lecturer and programme co-ordinator, Mr Farai Kwenda, said the students were happy to hear from a practitioner about the thrills and challenges of the industry.

‘I hope this will help them shape their career choices and expectations and have an idea of what Portfolio Management practice is. Such a presentation lays a solid foundation for their Honours academic year,’ he said.
